What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation)?

GEO — generative engine optimisation — is the practice of building your website so AI search engines like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity can read it, understand it, and cite your business in their answers. It’s the natural next step after SEO, and for most local businesses it’s still wide open territory.

Why GEO matters now

More and more people no longer scroll a page of blue links. They ask an assistant a question — “who’s a good web designer in the Bay of Plenty?” — and read the short answer it gives back. If an AI engine can’t confidently understand what your business does and who it serves, you simply won’t appear in that answer, no matter how long you’ve been trading.

Classic SEO gets you ranked in Google’s traditional results. GEO gets you named and recommended inside AI-generated answers. The two overlap, but they aren’t the same job.

What GEO actually involves

  • Quotable, clear content — short, factual statements an AI can lift word-for-word, instead of vague marketing fluff.
  • Structured data (schema) — machine-readable markup that tells engines exactly what your business is, where it operates and what it offers.
  • A curated llms.txt file — a plain-language summary written for AI crawlers (more on that in our other guides).
  • A clean, fast, server-rendered site — bloated, JavaScript-heavy pages are harder for crawlers to read and trust.

GEO is our wedge

At Te Puke Digital we build every site for Google and for AI search from the ground up. It’s the thing that sets our work apart, and it’s why we use our own network of sites as a live test bed before we recommend anything to clients. See our GEO / AI search service, or browse the network we build and rank.

FAQ

Is GEO different from SEO?

Yes. SEO optimises for traditional search rankings; GEO optimises for being read and cited by AI answer engines. Good GEO builds on solid SEO foundations rather than replacing them.

Do small businesses need GEO?

If your customers ask AI assistants for recommendations — and increasingly they do — then yes. Local businesses that get this right early have a real first-mover advantage.

How do I start with GEO?

Begin with a readability check: clear content, proper schema, a curated llms.txt, and a fast site. Get an AI-readiness check if you’d like us to look at yours.
