Step 1: Find out what you actually control
Locate (or request) three things: your domain registrar login, your website admin/hosting access, and confirmation of who is listed as the domain registrant. This tells you what’s already yours and what you need to claim back.
Step 2: Reclaim ownership if needed
If the domain is registered in the provider’s name, request that the registrant be corrected to your business, in writing. For .nz domains there are formal channels if a provider refuses. Most of the time a clear, firm request is enough.
Step 3: Take a full backup
Before moving anything, get a complete copy of your website — files, database and content — plus your email if it’s tied to the domain. Never start a migration without a safety net.
Step 4: Migrate, then switch
Set the site up on the new host and test it thoroughly before pointing the domain at it, so there’s no downtime. Then update the domain’s settings to the new host. Done right, visitors never notice — and your rankings come with you.
Step 5: Tidy up
Confirm email still works, check forms and links, submit your sitemap, and make sure you now hold every login. From here on, you’re in control.
