The NZ Edible Ecosystem Planner is a purpose-built digital tool that helps New Zealanders plan, design and grow productive food forests and orchards with confidence. Built as part of the Troppo ecosystem and the wider Vector Group vision, it turns complex horticultural knowledge into an intuitive, interactive experience — making regenerative growing accessible to everyone from beginners to experienced growers.
The vision
Create a tool that turns overwhelm into clarity — and ideas into planted ecosystems. Many people want to grow their own food but get stuck on the basics: what to plant, when to plant it, and how different plants work together. The planner answers those questions through a structured, data-driven approach grounded in food-forest and syntropic design principles.
What we built
- Interactive plant directory — filter hundreds of NZ-suited species by type (fruits, herbs, vegetables, natives), climate zone, growing system and seasonal timing.
- Climate-aware planning — a New Zealand climate-zone guide covering frost windows and seasonal variation, so users pick the right plants for their location.
- Regenerative planting matrix — supports syntropic agroforestry, showing plant relationships and stacking strategies to encourage biodiversity and soil regeneration.
- Seasonal intelligence — a built-in guide for planting, pruning and harvesting in step with natural cycles, year-round.
Design & technical execution
The interface is clean, minimal and highly scannable, visually grounded in nature and responsive-first — it feels more like exploring a living system than navigating software. Under the hood it runs a structured plant database with dynamic filtering, frontend rendering optimised for large datasets, and a clean, modular architecture built for future expansion.
